A belt lipectomy, also known as a lower-body lift or circumferential body lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to eliminate or reduce excess skin around the hips and lower back area following major weight-loss. Educate yourself about this procedure and discuss it with your plastic surgeon to determine if a belt lipectomy is right for you.
- Prior to the Surgery
All patients are required to set up an initial consultation with their cosmetic surgeon before undergoing any type of plastic surgery procedure. During this time, your surgeon may ask you to complete a patient medical history questionnaire outlining your family medical history, previous surgeries, current medications, lifestyle factors, and health status to determine if you are healthy enough for surgery. In addition to determining your risk factors and overall health, the initial consultation is your opportunity to ask questions regarding the procedural steps, required anesthesia, recovery period, and overall results.
- Procedure Steps
After administering general anesthesia, your cosmetic surgeon will create a circumferential incision around your midsection so that excess skin and fat can be removed from the abdomen, hips, waist, and thighs. Because belt lipectomy procedures loosen the skin above the buttocks, many patients find that the procedure also works to restore flattened buttocks contours to a more youthful shape. Your surgeon will then pull the remaining skin upwards before closing the incision using sutures or staples.
Your midsection and trunk will be will be wrapped in compression garments immediately following the procedure in order to control post-operative swelling and support the newly contoured tissues. It is important to follow all of your cosmetic surgeon’s after-care instructions regarding your activity level, diet, and bathing restrictions. Most patients find that they are able to return to their normal activities approximately four-to-six weeks after the procedure.
