For some people, a healthy diet and exercise plan simply isn’t enough to lose weight. For these people, bariatric surgery performed by a qualified surgeon may be advantageous. With many types of weight-loss surgery to consider, knowing the facts about each is the first step to deciding which kind may be right for you:
- Roux-en-Y
This is the most common form of gastric bypass surgery and is an irreversible procedure. The surgeon makes incisions in the stomach and small intestine and forms a small pouch which holds about one ounce of food. This allows most of the food you consume to go directly into the small intestine, reducing the amount of food and nutrients you absorb. As a result, you will find you feel fuller faster and therefore eat much less, leading to weight loss.
- Biliopancreatic Diversion
Also a type of gastric bypass surgery, this procedure makes the stomach smaller by about 80%. As with the Roux-en-Y surgery, this allows you to absorb less food and in turn, lose weight. This type of bariatric surgery is recommended for severely obese patients with a BMI of 50 or higher.
- Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Binding (LAGB)
One of the more common types of bariatric surgery due to its simplicity, LAGB involves separating the stomach into two parts with an inflatable band that can be tightened much like a belt. The small upper part of your stomach therefore limits your food intake, which promotes weight loss.
- Vertical Banded Gastroplasty
Commonly known as stomach stapling, this procedure also splits the stomach into an upper and lower half, with the upper half limiting food intake.
- Sleeve Gastrectomy
A newer type of bariatric surgery, sleeve gastrectomy changes the structure of your stomach to a tube shape of about 25% its original size, which limits caloric intake and thus allows weight loss.

Are you considering liposuction? If you exercise regularly and still struggle with stubborn areas of fat, liposuction may be the right choice for you. Here are some of the most common areas of the body to receive liposuction:
- Stomach
Stubborn fat in the stomach area can be frustrating, especially when exercise and diet aren’t helping. Using suction to dissolve and remove fat, abdominal liposuction targets fat deposits while simultaneously tightening the overlying skin.
- Buttocks
Because the buttocks are naturally inclined to be fatty, exercising to obtain a firm, lean backside can be challenging. To improve the size and contours of your buttocks, liposuction is an attractive option.
- Upper Arms
It is impossible to “spot reduce” flabby areas on your body with weight-resistance training or cardio. Trying to get rid of fatty upper arms without help can be vexing. Fortunately, liposuction can help you on your way to lean upper arms.
- Thighs
Whether you’d like to reduce fat in your anterior (front), outer, or inner thighs, liposuction can assist you. The thighs are a very common place for stubborn fat, and the liposuction procedure can give you slimmer, firmer thighs and hips.
- Face
A common request for liposuction, many women and men want to rid themselves of double chins, chubby cheeks, and jowls. New equipment and techniques are helping facial liposuction to be a much smoother process than in the past.
- Ankles
Many people struggle with fat around their ankles. To achieve a slender ankle, liposuction may be the answer.
- Male chest
For men with gynocomastia, or enlargement of male breasts, or weight problems, liposuction can eliminate fat and create a flatter, firmer chest.
Are you still wondering if liposuction is right for you? Call Houston’s Premier Plastic Surgery at (832) 431-5296 to schedule a free consultation. We offer a variety of procedures including breast reduction, breast augmentation, and tummy tucks.

A facelift is an ideal procedure for both men and women who wish to reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles and sagging skin. Continue reading to learn more about facelifts and who is a good candidate for this cosmetic procedure:
- Those with Loose Skin
During a facelift, excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin on the upper or lower portion of the face is stretched into a more youthful position. In order for a person to be an ideal candidate for a facelift, he or she must have loose skin that can be improved with the surgery.
- Those in Good Health
A facelift is a surgical procedure that is performed under anesthesia and does carry some risks. Before undergoing a facelift, a person should be in good overall health with no pre-existing conditions that may affect the outcome of the surgery.
- Those with Reasonable Expectations
It is important that a candidate for a facelift has realistic expectations of the results that can be achieved with the procedure. Those that expect unreasonable results should be counseled by their surgeon beforehand to determine if a facelift is the right option. In addition, good candidates must be emotionally prepared for the recovery and results after surgery.
- Those with Ideal Skin Elasticity and Bone Structure
A good candidate for a facelift has supple, elastic skin that will heal quickly after the procedure. If a person’s skin is not elastic or has a significant amount of sun damage, it may not respond well to the procedure and form extensive scar tissue. It is also important for a person to have a strong bone structure which will respond well to the stretching of the skin.
